About the Russell Theatre

For many of us, The Russell Theatre holds a special place in our hearts - where magical childhood memories came to life on the big screen amid the ambiance of twinkling stars, moving clouds, ornate statues and even rainbows. As Maysville native Nick Clooney wrote,

"We, and every other youngster in town lucky enough to be there, simply knew that when the lights were dimmed, we, individually, were transported to unimaginable places. Our tiny circumscribed world exploded into sparkling shards of possibilities."

This splendor and magic can live again for all of us. For those who have yet to experience the enchantment of the Russell, we can provide them with the same remarkable gift of unforgetable memories that only an historic “atmospheric theater” can provide.

Over the past decade, The Russell Theatre Corporation has worked diligently to rescue and stablilize this nostalgic and valuable part of our community’s history. The time has come to bring this worthwhile project to completion. The “Restore the Brilliance Campaign” is focused exclusively on restoring The Russell to its rightful place in our community’s entertainment and tourism industry. Our goal is to reopen the Theatre as both a “movie palace” and a place for special events to support education, entertain young and old, and highlight our cultural diversity and common heritage. Our goal can only be achieved through the generosity of past friends and benefactors and new gifts from both the public and private sectors.

Saving a Community Treasure

The decision to move forward with a major gifts campaign to complete the Theatre’s renovation followed an in-depth feasibility study. More than 70 individuals were interviewed to compile their perceptions and comments regarding the future of the Theatre and the potential for a successful campaign. The study revealed a number of reasons why community and business leaders support the project including the:

  • Vital role the Theatre’s operation will play in revitalizing downtown Maysville
  • Preservation of the unique historic architecture and interior design
  • Importance of restoring one of the few remaining atmospheric theatres in the nation
  • Opportunities for educating children and youth about Maysville history and cultural diversity
  • History tied to the career of one of Maysville’s most famous residents, actress and recording star Rosemary Clooney
  • Major part of community’s efforts to build its tourism industry
  • Valuable source of entertainment for all ages
  • Enjoyment of hundreds of area residents who have nostagic memories of the Theatre
